Tug fan served the MHSD as president and advisor

Hal Jackson was born in 1917 in England, but his family relocated to the United States during his early childhood. He retired from General Motors Corp. in 1975 after a 25-year career as a graphic engineer. Hal developed his interest in the Great Lakes marine scene as a result of family vacations at Sault Ste. Marie, MI, and the Welland Canal, and was an avid marine photographer. He was a long-time member of the Marine Historical Society of Detroit’s Advisory Council and served as society president from 1973 to 1975. Hal was instrumental in setting up the early joint Marine Historical Society of Detroit and Michigan Railroad Club-sponsored Bob-Lo cruises to Port Huron and inaugurated the society’s 25-year membership award program. He is remembered for his entertaining and humorous slide programs, many of which featured his favorite subject – tugboats. He passed away on June 21, 1977. His son, Jim Jackson, was named MHSD Historian of the Year in 2000.
