Peter B. Worden was born on April 12, 1938, in Detroit. His grandfather, Scott B. Worden Sr., was a lakes captain and his father managed the Nicholson-Cleveland Terminal Co. until the early 1970s. Pete started taking ship pictures in 1950 and was introduced to the Marine Historical Society of Detroit in May 1950. He graduated from St. Ignatius High School, Cleveland, in 1956, and Ohio University in 1960 with a major in mathematics. He worked summers for the Cleveland Stevedore Co., the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers and the Nicholson- Cleveland Terminal. Due to that work, he was able to make several trips on the Paterson canallers trading out of Cleveland through the St. Lawrence River in the late 1950s. In September 1961, he entered the U.S. Coast Guard Officer Candidate School at Yorktown, VA, and was commissioned in January 1962. He was assigned to the coast guard’s vessel traffic center Soo Control at Sault Ste. Marie, MI, and worked there for three years. Many of his finest photographs were taken during his time with the Coast Guard. In 1965, Pete returned to Detroit to work for the Ford Motor Co. He went back to school and, through the University of Detroit evening program, obtained a master’s degree in business administration. Upon his death, his vast collection of black and white vessel photographs dating back to the 1900s was donated to the Marine Historical Society of Detroit, which has scanned the images for posterity. The original albums and scans are now part of the Historical Collections of the Great Lakes at Bowling Green State University.
